US eyes Russian military bases in Central Asia
On September 22, in the capital of Finland, Helsinki, the head of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, met with his American counterpart, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, Mark Milli. During the talks, issues of strategic security and prevention of armed incidents between the two states were raised.
In addition, the military discussed the possibility of using Russian military facilities in Central Asia by the Americans. According to the Wall Street Journal, Gerasimov did not give a specific answer whether his country is ready for such cooperation with the United States.
After a hasty flight from Afghanistan, the Pentagon is looking for opportunities to quickly respond to emerging terrorist threats in a country controlled by the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation). This is, first of all, about the use of Russian bases in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
At the same time, the WSJ recalls that military cooperation with Russia has been prohibited by the Pentagon at the legislative level for many years.
While the United States and Russia are concerned about the threat of terrorism, the idea of working with Russia to counter terrorism is fraught with challenges, especially politically.
