Merkel's party lost the elections to the Bundestag
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU / CSU), of which the current German Chancellor Angela Merkel is a member, with a score of 24,1% ranks second in the count of 75% of the vote. The leader in the elections is the Social Democratic Party of Germany, which gains 25,7%. Thus, Olaf Scholz will become the next chancellor of the country.
In total, six parties will be represented in the Bundestag of the 20th convocation: in addition to the aforementioned CDU / CSU and SPD, with preliminary results of 14,8%, 11,5%, 10,3% and 4,9%, the Greens pass, Free Democratic party, "Alternative for Germany" and "Left", respectively.
The SPD, as expected, prevailed in the northeast and central lands of the country, while the CDU / CSU bloc (CDU / CSU) traditionally took over in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and in the west of Germany. The conservative eastern lands of the former GDR opted for the center-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).
The winning party is expected to form a coalition to achieve a constitutional majority in parliament. In all likelihood, the Social Democratic Party of Germany will enter into an alliance with the Greens.
