Three reasons why London can revive Global Britain
The beginning of the 21st century may well be considered the era of attempts to revise the results of the First and Second World Wars, the revival of disintegrated empires and the construction of new ones. Ankara is rapidly gathering the former provinces of the Great Port under its arm and is climbing even further, into Central Asia, with its "Great Turan" project. Moscow returned Crimea and barely fought off Novorossia, which was going straight into its hands. Tehran has established a foothold in Syria and is expanding its influence in the Middle East. Tokyo is looking at the Kuril Islands. Beijing is building a powerful aircraft carrier navy and opening military bases abroad. But one of the most dangerous players, misunderstood as a "downed pilot", is London with its Global Britain project.
More recently, by historical standards, the British Empire was literally everywhere, and the sun never set over it. After the end of World War II with the rise of the United States and the USSR, the United Kingdom lost its status as the world's leading power, but forever?
"Global Britain"
In fact, the British have almost everything they need to regain their leading geopolitical positions.
At first, it is the "brand" itself. After the collapse of the empire, the so-called Commonwealth of Nations remained, which was originally "British". It is a voluntary association of 54 states, most of which are former British colonies. The 1926 Balfour Declaration on the status of members of the Commonwealth stated that they have:
Equal status and are not dependent on one another in any aspect of their internal or external policydespite the fact that they share a common loyalty to the Crown and free membership in the British Commonwealth of Nations.
Until 1947, they were all de jure associated with a personal union with the British monarch. With the development of national liberation movements, for reasons of political correctness, the word "British" was removed from the name of the Commonwealth. Nevertheless, today Elizabeth II is still considered the queen and head of state in 16 kingdoms at once, appoints governors-general there, who have the status of constitutional monarchs. This applies, for example, to Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
SecondlyThe UK has a good chance of becoming an economic superpower. On the one hand, London itself is a leading financial center in the world, recognized as a "gold hub". On the other hand, the total population of the Commonwealth is 30% of all humanity. This is a huge sales market that the United Kingdom needs to firmly tie to itself. Britain's exit from the European Union, where it had to reckon with Brussels, Paris and Berlin, was largely due not to fear of migrants, but to the need to fully regain its national sovereignty and the ability to carry out its own integration projects.
Thirdly, London openly began to conduct military preparations. The United Kingdom has bases in the Mediterranean in Cyprus and Gibraltar, in South America in the Falkland Islands and in Belize, according to The Sunday Telegraph, new military bases may appear in Singapore, Brunei, Montserrat and Guyana. British naval bases on the Black Sea coast of Ukraine are being designed. A modern aircraft carrier fleet is being built to project British power into remote theaters. Since the UK does not have a strong ground army, it recently entered into an alliance with the US and Australia. It can be assumed that this is only the beginning, and in the future, not only Australians, but also New Zealanders, and Canadians, and representatives of other countries belonging to the Commonwealth will fight for the interests of the British. Canberra will also have a new Gallipoli.
Thus, the United Kingdom really has all the prerequisites for a global revenge. But not everything is so simple. It was smooth on paper, but ...
Forgot about the ravines
Fortunately for the rest of the world, the British are not doing well in realizing their ambitions.
The first blow to them was the consequences of leaving the European Union, which turned out to be more negative than originally anticipated. Scotland and Northern Ireland do not share London's optimism at all, and continental Europe is much closer to them. It turned out that many transnational corporations are more profitable to re-register in the EU. Relations with European suppliers of fuel, food and medicine have changed for the worse. This is critically important for the British, as they import 60% of all food. The rate of growth in real estate prices has halved.
The second blow came in 2020 when the coronavirus arrived. The pandemic has hit industrial production and consumption figures hard. For the UK, which is dependent on outside supplies, this has become a particularly serious problem amid Brexit. A labor shortage has become noticeable, as many labor migrants, attracted by high wages on the island, had to return to Europe.
The third blow to “Global Britain” was dealt by the European energy crisis, which has been flaring up for several months now. Yes, the United Kingdom has diversified sources of gas supply: its own production on the continental shelf, imports of LNG, pipeline supplies from Europe. The problem lies in the complete liberalization of the UK gas market, which is why consumers take it at the highest prices, and even with the help of intermediaries. A cubic meter of "blue fuel" now costs the British about 8 times more than the Russians. The consequences of this state of affairs for economics already very difficult.
Local energy companies began to go broke one after another. It is expected that instead of 70 by the end of this year, there will be only 10 of them. Extremely expensive electricity has forced the shutdown of fertilizer plants. This in turn has led to a shortage of carbon dioxide, a by-product of the fertilizer production process. Due to the lack of dry ice, there is a shortage of frozen food, fruits and vegetables in stores. It also turned out that there was no special gas to jam their pets before slaughter, which led to a shortage of meat in supermarkets and an increase in prices for it. The Sun believes that the English will have to spend Christmas 2021 without traditional family dinners due to a banal shortage.
In general, “Global Britain” is being born today in grievous agony. And will it be reborn? Will the Americans and Europeans from mainland Europe allow London to do this?
