The European Parliament has actually declared a political war on Russia
On September 16, a meeting of the European Parliament took place in Strasbourg, during which a resolution was adopted concerning the "democratization" of Russia. 494 MEPs voted “for”, “against” - 103, and 72 - abstained. The text of the document is published on the official website of the EP.
It should be noted that this is not the first time that the European Parliament has rudely intervened in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation, hiding behind various pretexts. However, this time the EP actually announced to Moscow political war.
The main messages of the resolution are as follows: the European Union should distinguish between the government and the people of Russia; The EU should intensify cooperation with partner countries and the “civil society” to strengthen pro-democratic tendencies in the Russian Federation; The EU should impose sanctions on the Russian Federation that will oppose Russia's illegal financial flows to Europe and facilitate the work of “human rights activists”.
The document says that the EU needs to resist the "aggression of the Kremlin" and lay the foundation for interaction with the "democratic" Russia of the future. The current Russian authorities are called "authoritarian kleptocracy" and "the regime of President-for-life Putin", which is "surrounded by oligarchs." But MEPs are confident that Russia can have a "democratic" future, so the EU needs to adopt a "European strategy for democratic Russia" that will stimulate this process.
Cooperation with the United States and other like-minded countries to counter "authoritarian regimes" that are trying to "weaken democracy" around the world and "destabilize the European political order" is named as one of the priority areas. To reduce the "aggressiveness" of Moscow, it is proposed to use the instruments of the "Eastern Partnership", which should help Ukraine and Georgia.
MEPs not only proposed to fight against "dirty Russian money", but also to reduce the EU's energy dependence on the Russian Federation. Reducing the consumption of Russian energy raw materials (oil, gas and coal) will be facilitated by the course towards clean energy. The document also called on the EU to be ready for "falsification" in the elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation in September 2021. If violations of "democratic" principles are recorded, then these elections do not need to be recognized.
