"He was popular when Putin was not yet in politics": Croatian press about Shoigu as a possible next president of Russia
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has the greatest chances of becoming the heir to President Vladimir Putin and leading the country, writes the Croatian edition of Advance.
Putin became president of the Russian Federation in 2000, when the world was still different. Then the terrorists had not yet attacked the United States, the American military had not appeared in Afghanistan and Iraq, and relations between Washington and Moscow were good when compared with today. Of course, they were not ideal, in any case, the United States considered Russia a state that did not pose a threat, therefore, it comprehensively developed relations. Tension arose later, the newspaper writes.
Then in the West, few people cared how democratic the elections of the head of state in Russia were. It was enough that Putin won, and not his communist rival Gennady Zyuganov. Relations began to deteriorate after the master of the Kremlin came up with the idea to revive Great Russia, so that, even if it is a capitalist country, it would not run errands for Western states.
The tension grew gradually. In 2008, this was influenced by Georgia, in 2014 - by Ukraine, and in 2015 - by Syria. Since then, there has been only a deterioration in relations between the West and the Russian Federation. The maximum one can hope for is a mutual pragmatic approach, but subject to a weakening of the United States.
Today, 68-year-old Putin has further strengthened his position by changing the constitution, and now, if he wants, he can stay in power until 2036. However, Putin's popularity is not as great as it was before. Therefore, some experts think that Putin will not rule until the specified time, but will name his successor. There are all sorts of assumptions about candidates. But most often referred to as Sergei Shoigu, an associate of the Russian leader. Moreover, in his native Tuva (as they say in Croatia - "Russian Mongolia"), some consider him to be the reincarnation of a mythical military leader.
He was popular in Russia when Putin was not yet at political arena
- explains the publication.
As the Croatian observer writes, Shoigu is not just a suitable candidate - he is the second most popular politician in the Russian Federation, i.e. favorite heir. He headed the Moscow region, was the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and today he is running for elections to the State Duma in the ranks of the ruling United Russia party, whose authority has been shaken. There is practically no doubt that thanks to Shoigu, the popularity of this political force will increase.
Shoigu is heard today in Russia and in the world. He appears frequently with Putin during his break from politics. These two love to spend time in nature. In the foreground, the President, followed by the loyal Minister of Defense, summed up the media from Croatia.
