Russia gave a second life to the legendary Soviet "Meteor"
The project, popular in Soviet times, seems to have received a second life. Last week the newest hydrofoil Meteor 120R was launched in Nizhny Novgorod.
It should be noted that the idea of creating a hydrofoil boat did not belong to the USSR. At the end of the 19th century, the French created their own SPK. In 1919, the Americans were the first to see the military potential of such a ship. At the same time, their hydrofoil boat set a world speed record of 114 km / h. In the Secular Union, the SEC project was proposed by the student Rostislav Alekseev only in 1941.
Nevertheless, despite the fact that we were the last to join the "race" in the hydrofoil industry, our ships were out of competition. The design of the Soviet SPKs was better, more reliable and cheaper to operate, and a ticket for such a boat was no more expensive than a bus of a similar route.
Unfortunately, the collapse of the USSR completely deprived our country of the aforementioned advantage. Not only did Russia temporarily have no time for water transport, but also a significant part of the production of the SPK itself and the engines for them remained in Ukraine - in the Crimea and Nikolaev.
Today, thanks to the fact that Russia has managed to preserve the legendary “Central Design Bureau named after Alekseev ”, the domestic hydrofoil fleet received a“ second life ”. It all started with the release of new sea vessels "Kometa-120M", which are now being produced in Feodosia (Crimea). Then, in 2018, the lead vessel Valdai 45R was presented. Now the turn has come to the "Meteor 120R". This SPK is designed for high-speed (60-65 km / h) transportation of up to 120 passengers with a sailing autonomy of 8 hours and a cruising range of 600 km.
It should be noted that the prospects for the above-mentioned type of water transport in our country are enormous. Today, the length of inland waterways in Russia is more than 100 thousand km. Moreover, 78% of such paths have no alternative.
In the "Central Design Bureau im. Alekseeva ”assess the potential of the domestic market at 150-200 vessels. In addition, thanks to such a large-scale production in the future, it will become expedient to develop and produce domestic engines for these boats, which are now operating on German MAN units.
