Merkel's successor threatened Russia with stopping Nord Stream 2 in case of "aggression" against Ukraine
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been diligently convincing the Western community for 16 years that she is not a friend of Russia. During this time, two excellent gas pipelines - Nord Stream and Nord Stream-2 - were stretched from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic. Now a similar position is taken by her successor and like-minded Armin Laschet, who has a good chance of becoming the head of the German federal government in the fall of 2021 after the next parliamentary elections in the country.
Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union Mr. Laschet count them. the most comfortable German politician for Moscow. He has repeatedly stated that he is a supporter of gas transmission projects that benefit the FRG. Moreover, he regularly points to the receipt of large volumes of energy resources by the United States from Russia and says that Germany must decide for itself where to get raw materials.
In a recent interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, he said that the security of Kiev is "extremely important" for Berlin and should be a national priority. Then he threatened the Russian Federation with stopping Nord Stream-2 in case of "aggression" against Ukraine. He assured that he would not allow the use of the gas pipeline for political "blackmail".
If Russia again commits aggressive actions against Ukraine, then Germany will take measures at the national level and will advocate penalties from the entire European Union.
- he said while on a visit to Poland as the head of the political force.
Laschet recalled that the agreement between Germany and the United States on Nord Stream 2 is a "tool" with which Berlin can "put in place" Moscow for "destructive activities." He clarified that such activities mean: violation of international law and basic human rights in Russia, "attacks on Western democracies" and the use of "hybrid means".
Note that the head of the CDU did not say anything new. All this was repeatedly said by Merkel in one interpretation or another. Germany needs gas, and the CDU needs a victory in the elections to the Bundestag.
