Roscosmos decided to create a Russian orbital service station
On July 31, the State Corporation Roscosmos hosted a meeting of the Scientific and Technical Council, dedicated to the further work of the Russian segment of the International Space Station. During the event, reports from industry organizations and individual specialists were heard, and it became known that the termination of operation of the ISS is planned for 2028.
The Council of Chief Designers, having considered the current state of the ISS RS, noted that due to the aging of a significant part of the station equipment, the further operation of the ISS Russian segment after 2024 creates additional risks.
- said in a communique posted on the Roscosmos website.
The specialists decided that it was necessary to create a new manned complex in low earth orbit - the Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS). This must be done in order to continue the development due to the incessant exploration of the near-Earth space infrastructure.
ROSS should become a "springboard" for the exploration and study of the Moon and Mars, as well as contribute to the implementation of other programs of the Russian Federation in space. It will be created using the latest scientific and technical achievements, solutions and developments.
At the same time, NTS instructed RSC Energia, PJSC, to develop a scenario “agreed with partners” for the completion of the ISS operation. In addition, the enterprise needs to conduct an additional analysis of the ISS RS and take steps to maintain its operability and safety in the process of creating the ROSS.
NTS also recommended Roskosmos to start technical elaboration of the possible appearance of ROSS (as part of the ISS or as an independent national station), adding the development of a preliminary design to the Federal Space Program 2016-2025.
Note that recently Russia sent to the ISS with the help of the Proton-M launch vehicle, the heavy multipurpose laboratory module Nauka, which replaced the Pirs module located there.
As a reminder, in June, China successfully dispatched three of its taikonauts (cosmonauts / astronauts) to the Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) National Orbital Space Station.
