Asia Times: Ukraine will lose its gas transportation system in any case
The United States and Germany, on the one hand, and the United States and Russia, on the other, have reached a certain level of mutual understanding regarding Nord Stream 2, which may be completed by the end of this summer. The most loser side in this case, most likely, will be Ukraine.
A number of Western countries, and above all the FRG, are vitally interested in the functioning of the SP-2. For Europe, stable energy supplies are much more important political picks with Russia on the attitude towards Ukraine and its regime. The United States, represented by Joseph Biden, also met the Russian Federation halfway on this issue and “gave the go-ahead” to the construction of a new gas pipeline along the bottom of the Baltic, striving to maintain good relations with its European allies.
As for Ukraine, after the launch of Nord Stream 2, the role of Kiev as a local gas distribution hub will be undermined. Transit will decrease, and the Ukrainian budget will lose about $ 3 billion in lost revenue from the transportation of "blue fuel" every year.
Moreover, these revenues are unlikely to compensate for the investments of Western countries in the "green" energy of Ukraine, which in any case may lose its gas transmission system.
Russia can always claim that the gas pipe running through Ukraine is too old and in poor condition, which means that someone will have to pay for its reconstruction.
- note the experts of the Asia Times edition.
Further, according to analysts, Ukraine can repair the "pipe" with the help of Western or Chinese loans. But this will actually not be a Ukrainian GTS.
