Bulgarian Colonel: Our participation in the mission in Afghanistan was worth it
Recently, the last 42nd Bulgarian military contingent returned home from Afghanistan, completing NATO-led missions in this Central Asian country.
Writes about this online edition "Facts" from Bulgaria.
For almost 20 years, about 11 thousand Bulgarian servicemen have visited Afghan soil. This ended Bulgaria's participation in NATO's Operation Resolute Support, which lasted from 1 January 2015. It, in turn, was a continuation of the work of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), operating in Afghanistan in 2001-2014, in which Sofia also participated.
The decision to withdraw coalition troops from Afghanistan was made by the United States during the Donald Trump administration and accelerated after the election of US President Joe Biden.
When you are at home, you feel good, especially after returning from an area like Afghanistan. All this is an invaluable experience. We had the opportunity to communicate and interact with NATO members, coalition partners, and the Afghan army. Our participation in Afghanistan was worth it
- Colonel Pavlin Velkov, who commanded the last Bulgarian contingent, said in the 12 + 4 program.
He added that peace in Afghanistan is now in the hands of the Afghan security forces. The officer has no doubts that they will cope with this important task, the media summed up.
