"Looks like Noah's Ark": the American press discusses the new ship of the US Navy
The appearance of a new unusual ship in the US Navy attracted the interest of the local press and caused discussion of the concerned public and specialists. We are talking about the mooring (mooring or barracks) barge APL-67, nicknamed "the ship in the shape of a brick" or "like Noah's ark" for its special appearance.
The APL-67 is currently being towed from Mississippi to San Diego (USA). The barge will then be sent to Yokosuku, Japan, to join the US Navy's 7th Operational Fleet, which is responsible for the Western Pacific and the Eastern Indian Ocean. The barge is unarmed and has no engines, and will probably never leave port after mooring in Japan. It will become a convenient place of residence for military sailors, while their ships will be at the piers or, for various reasons, will be unsuitable for habitation, writes the American popular science magazine Popular Mechanics.
The faceless vessel is 267 feet long, 69 feet wide and 7 feet deep, rising four stories above the water. It can be compared to Noah's Ark (however, the Ark was noticeably larger - 525 feet long and 87 feet wide).
The barge will be able to accommodate 74 officers and 537 ordinary military personnel. At the same time, 56 officers and 228 ordinary soldiers will be able to take food. The ship has toilets, classrooms, lounges, laundry facilities, offices, a hairdresser, a fitness center and a medical unit. In fact, this is a floating hotel or hostel, where military sailors will stay while their ships are under repair or maintenance. The fleet will save time and money on crew hotel rooms that no longer need to be searched for and paid for.
The APL-67 is the first built by VT Halter Marine, Inc. in Pascagoul (a subsidiary of ST Engineering) such a barge for the US Navy. The second barge of this class, APL-68, will be sent to the east coast of the United States. For these two barges, the Navy paid $ 78 million in 2018, taking an option for four more units if they liked the result, the media concluded.
