It became known about the search for a Russian submarine by NATO ships in the Mediterranean Sea

A submarine of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy observed the actions of the AUG of the British Navy in the Mediterranean. However, there is nothing unusual in this - it would be surprising if the Russians did not follow the Royal Navy, which now has two aircraft carriers, writes the British newspaper Daily Telegraph.

Presumably, a Russian diesel-electric submarine of the Kilo class led the observation of the British connection (this is how NATO classifies submarines of projects 877 "Halibut" and 636.3 "Varshavyanka"). It was probably one of the six "Varshavyanka" Black Sea Fleet ("Novorossiysk", "Rostov-on-Don", "Stary Oskol", "Krasnodar", "Veliky Novgorod" and "Kolpino").

In the Eastern Mediterranean, a pair of Merlin Mk2 helicopters was raised in search of the submarine, which dropped sonar buoys into the water. One of the rotary-wing aircraft took off from the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, and the second from the support vessel of the Fort Victoria type - RFA Fort George (A388).



It is not known what the destroyer USS The Sullivans of the US Navy and the frigate HNLMS Evertsen of the Royal Netherlands Navy were doing at that time. The British Department of Defense declined to confirm or deny the fact of the incident, but assured that "the most decisive measures" are being taken to protect the compound. The Russian military department also does not comment on this information.

However, it became known that this happened four days after the incident with the British destroyer HMS Defender off the Crimean coast on 23 June. Currently, the AUG has passed the Suez Canal and is moving towards the Arabian Sea.

We remind you that on July 6, the second aircraft carrier of the British Navy, HMS Prince of Wales, entered the Mediterranean Sea. He was accompanied by an escort of two P2000 patrol boats - HMS "Dasher" (P280) and HMS "Pursuer" (P273). They proceeded to the base in Gibraltar, where the British nuclear submarine Artful arrived the day before with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
