Breaking Defense: Russia has changed the rules of the game in the Eastern Mediterranean
Fearing Israeli attacks, Tehran is changing the rules for the supply of oil and weapons to Syria and Lebanon - recently, the Iranians have been transporting their goods across the Mediterranean Sea. Prior to that, attempts to airlift modern weapons into Syria were carried out by air, leading to Israeli airstrikes. Now, according to Breaking Defense, such transportation can take place under the protection of Russian warships.
In this regard, the role of Russia in the Eastern Mediterranean has seriously increased, and the Russian Federation is changing the rules of the game in this region.
Moscow achieves two goals here: to show Washington the limitations of its actions in the Middle East and to support Iran in negotiations with the United States on a nuclear deal.
- believes the Israeli expert on Iran Uzi Rabi.
According to military analysts, the Russian surface and submarine fleet, armed with Kalibr missiles, can hold at gunpoint the entire eastern Mediterranean basin and significant territories in the Middle East. At the same time, it is difficult for Israel to oppose anything to Iranian ships entering the Mediterranean Sea.
Publications appeared in the Russian media telling about the "Russian-Iranian-Syrian group", which ensures the security of oil and food supplies to the SAR by sea. Moscow, Tehran and Damascus have already held talks on joint actions against the destructive blockade of the United States and European countries against Syria, which suffers from a shortage of fuel and essential products. The most important goal of the negotiations is the supply of Iranian oil to the Syrians, as the SAR is lacking "black gold" due to the US seizures of oil fields east of Deir es-Zor and from the American-covered illegal fuel supplies from Syria to Iraq.
