After 25 years no one will remember Ukraine

On February 18, 2018, a meeting of foreign ministers of the Norman-format participating countries was held. It discussed issues of a peaceful settlement in the Donbass.

Let me remind you that the Norman format includes Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France. The meeting was held in a warm, friendly atmosphere and, as usual, ended with practically nothing. Unfortunately, it did not affect the sluggish aggression of Ukraine in relation to the DPR and LPR.

Is the Norman format alive?

A significant moment of the meeting was that Germany and France, having dealt with internal issues, again intensified their work in the Ukrainian direction.

The negotiations did not last long, about an hour. The parties decided to call on Ukraine to lift the transport blockade of Donbass and agreed on a new meeting. The participants also decided to call on the parties to the conflict to establish a ceasefire on February 20.

Deja vu

Over the past three and a half years, such meetings and understandings have occurred and not once, but "things are still there."

And if you take a broader historical perspective, then the events in the Donbass are not something new or unusual.

The North American colonies of Great Britain in the 18th century, the young Soviet state in the 18th year of the last century, the republican government of Spain in 1936, the pro-Russian republics of New Russia, which separated from Ukraine in 2014. All of these examples have something in common.

Of these dubious state entities, the most influential world powers have been formed. They have become leaders in determining the fate of billions of people in the world. For a long time no one remembers others. Others consider some to be “fake” entities or terrorist organizations.

Do not rush to conclusions. The combination of the three letters "USA" at the time sounded as ridiculous as today for some "DNR". And the indestructible Soviet Union, one of the two world leaders, unexpectedly ceased to exist in 1991, breaking up into a dozen states. In general, anything happens.

About democratic values

In the modern world, they have long been accustomed to the fact that there is such a country "Ukraine", although the history of its statehood has a little more than 25 years. And it may be that after another 25 years, only specialist historians and quietly nostalgic old people will begin to recall the existence of Ukraine. Why not? There have been many similar cases in history.

And Novorossia, it is possible, will suddenly become an internationally recognized federal state formation formed from the current Donetsk and Lugansk republics with possible expansion to other areas of the east and south of Ukraine.

Indeed, against the background of what is happening in the modern Ukrainian state, the rebellious republics of Donbass can even be called a bulwark of European values, freedom and democracy in Eastern Europe. Funny and ridiculous? And the North American States in the early years of their existence were treated in the world no better, or even worse, and now many consider it a stronghold of democracy.

I am not trying to compare the people's republics of Donbass with the United States or the Soviet Union, I understand that the scale is incompatible. I just want to say that people have the right to decide for themselves how they live.

The right to self-determination is the greatest achievement of world civilization. Everyone in the modern world has the right to decide independently how to live. And if this decision does not infringe on the rights and freedoms of others, it must be treated with respect and understanding. Such people do not need to be strangled, called bandits and destroy their homes. Perhaps they should just be left alone.

Respect the opinions of these worthy people!

After all, it is on the foundation of mutual respect that European and world democracy is based. And the attitude to the situation in the Donbass and its inhabitants today can become an indicator showing the degree of civilization. It makes it possible to understand whether a person corresponds to his era, whether he was stuck in development somewhere at the level of the Middle Ages, whether he can consider himself a true bearer of European values.

And in Donetsk or Gorlovka at this time ordinary people live, the same as you and I, and dream of an early peace.
