Kiev offered Russia an unexpected alternative to Nord Stream-2

1
The Russian-American summit in Helsinki was held behind closed doors. The details of what the presidents of the two countries were discussing are unknown, but it is obvious that the topic of Nord Stream-2 was raised. Earlier, Donald Trump spoke out very sharply against the construction of the Russian-German gas pipeline along the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

The head of the White House was not satisfied with the flow of dollars that went from Berlin to Moscow, instead of replenishing the NATO budget. The implementation of the underwater gas pipeline by Germany would, in his opinion, be a monstrous mistake that he was prepared to prevent by imposing sanctions against German companies wishing to participate in this project. After meeting with Vladimir Putin, the American president fairly streamlined commented on Berlin's interest in Nord Stream-2:

It is their choice - Germany

While the construction of the pipeline is inhibited only by the Kingdom of Denmark, all other transit countries have already given permission. After the statement by Donald Trump, Denmark will give its consent and that Nord Stream 2 will be built, the probability is very high. Apparently, everyone except Ukraine is already resigning to this fact, as a given. Independent receives a lot of money in payment for the use of its gas transportation system. Their loss will be an irreparable loss.

Unfortunately, the Kremlin failed to completely abandon Ukrainian transit. To preserve as a transit country a certain amount of natural gas was the fundamental requirement of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Apparently, US President Donald Trump raised the same topic at a meeting in Helsinki. Vladimir Putin made a statement on this subject:

I assured Mr. President that Russia is ready to maintain this transit. Moreover, we are ready to extend the transit contract, which expires next year in the event of the settlement of a dispute between business entities in the Stockholm Arbitration Court

US interest is very clear. The excess gas resulting from the “shale revolution” must be put somewhere. The European market is already divided. You can bite off his piece only by moving Gazprom, which can only be done by arranging a crisis with the supply of Russian “blue fuel”. For this purpose, the Ukrainian GTS was taken under American control. Currently, the US infrastructure is not yet ready for large-scale export of LNG to Europe, it will take several years to prepare it. But tentatively in 2020-2022, we can expect the beginning of a confrontation with the participation of Ukraine over the redivision of the European gas market. Therefore, now there is fuss in two directions. First, Gazprom needs to be forced to pump as much gas through Ukraine as possible so that in case of interruptions the scale of the problems is large. The second - to possibly slow down the construction of an alternative Nord Stream-2, since it is impossible to ban it.

Ukrainian US vassals are doing everything possible to the best of their ability. On July 6, the Ukrainian company Naftogaz filed a second lawsuit in arbitration in the amount of almost $ 12 billion with a request to review the tariff for the period from March 2018 to 2019. Judging by the comment of Yuri Vitrenko, who proposed to freeze the construction of Nord Stream-2 until an arbitration decision is received, the main purpose of the lawsuit is to banally delay time:

If we will “regulate” this dispute in arbitration, then it is almost impossible to finish before the end of 2019. At best, by the end of 2020

Also in Kiev, unexpectedly invited Russia to completely abandon the construction of an alternative Ukrainian gas pipeline. The representative of Naftogaz Vitrenko said:

The rate for Russian gas transit in case of extension of the contract after 2019 with full utilization of the Ukrainian gas pipeline’s capacities will be 20% lower than the one that Gazprom pays under the existing contract if Moscow refuses to implement the Nord Stream 2 project

Earlier, the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, said that no more than 15 billion cubic meters would go through Ukraine, but Kiev would do everything possible to increase these volumes to the maximum level. A fourth gas war is inevitable.
