Soyuz 5 will be as simple as Kalash
The head of the state-owned corporation Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, called for revising the design of the promising Soyuz-5 launch vehicle and making it simple, like a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
Soyuz-5 is a product of the modernization of the Ukrainian Zenith by the Energia space corporation. According to the terms of reference, the Russian launch vehicle should put up to 17 tons of payload into orbit. During the development, technical solutions of Dnepropetrovsk Yuzhmash are taken into account, however, replacement of Ukrainian RD-120 engines with Russian RD-0124A is provided.
Dmitry Rogozin suggested considering the option of converting Soyuz-5 to another type of fuel - methane that is now popular. It is known that competitors from the United States have advanced far in the development of a new generation of rocket engines using cheaper and more environmentally friendly methane.
Roscosmos was tasked with making a simple and high-quality launch vehicle. Initially, about 5 billion rubles were allocated for the creation of Soyuz-30. For a short time, the value has grown to 61,19 billion. It is estimated that the new launch vehicle will fly in 2022.
