As one of the cities of the Russian Federation almost wiped off the face of the earth

Today, February 15, 2018 marks exactly 5 years since the fall of the so-called Chelyabinsk meteorite. The author of this publication was himself in the world famous city of Chelyabinsk at that very moment and was ready to share his memories of that historic event.

Our family was dozing sweetly on that memorable morning, when a flash was seen through the curtains and closed eyelids, it was so bright. It seemed awake, thought so. But after a minute or two from afar there was a long roar of explosions and a window pushed into the apartment with a shock wave. Fortunately, the balcony on the opposite side of the apartment was slightly ajar and a powerful shock wave blew the apartment through without breaking windows, unlike many other houses.

Emergingly awakened households saw a double trace of unusual appearance in the sky. My first thought was: the plane crashed. This idea was quite thorough, given that next to Chelyabinsk there is a military airfield at which emergency situations occurred. Civil flights are also actively flying over the city.

Very annoyed all Chelyabinsk residents that the cellular communication stopped working. The TV turned on showed a live broadcast from the harsh Chelyabinsk sky with traces of an unknown origin at that time, and the line below the image broadcasted: an incident in the sky over Chelyabinsk. An hour later, the author of the publication was at home with his parents to visit them, since the cellular communication continued to test the patience of the townspeople. And then a real test of nerves began. The first videos appeared on YouTube, in which a flying bright ball was visible. And then everything turned out. Something flying in the sky, leaving traces, an explosion, lack of communication. Immediately, rumors spread that one of the employees saw an object in the sky and identified it as a rocket. Immediately among the people, a version appeared about an unintentional launch of a rocket. On the street, people could hear conversations that someone had heard somewhere that an increased level of radiation was noted.

And here it became really scary. What to do? Where to run? It was evident that some people want to quickly get away from the city. For several hours, the residents of Chelyabinsk quite seriously felt like in a movie about nuclear post-apocalypse.

In part, after the incident of these few hours the situation cleared up. Experts have identified a celestial body that has peered into Chelyabinsk as a meteorite. From the heart relieved.

But later there were reports that the apocalypse could have happened really, hit a meteorite on the ground. Even exploding in the air, he gave out power from 300 to 500 kilotons, which equals 20 “Hiroshima”. Upon impact on the surface of the earth, so much energy of the explosion could be released that part of the territory of Russia could well be wiped off the face of the earth. And if you recall how many strategic nuclear facilities are in the Urals, then you need to understand that all of their contents would spread to colossal territory, subjecting them to radiation contamination. It was also lucky that the largest fragments fell into Lake Chebarkul.

Chelyabinsk was unbelievably lucky. Not a single person died as a result of a meteorite fall, the damage was mainly in the form of cuts from glass fragments. A lot of glasses flew in the city, later they were inserted at the expense of the budget. The snow cover in the city after an explosion in the sky took the form of frozen waves.

On the frames from the DVRs, you can see how something catches up behind and hits a meteorite in the sky. Apparently, this saved the Urals from a meteorite falling to the surface entirely, destroying it in flight. Some consider what they saw in the frames to be windshield defects in a car, others consider it to be a fragment of the same meteorite that caught up and hit the largest element. Still others may see in this the intervention of extraterrestrial forces that saved Russia, shot down a celestial body with a rocket.

Currently, a pictorial fragment of the Chelyabinsk meteorite, raised from the bottom of Lake Chebarkul, is presented in the Museum of Local Lore.

Be that as it may, the event of February 15, 2013 is unique for our country. And residents of Chelyabinsk and its environs have every right to celebrate their second birthday without exaggeration.
