Kiev's refusal to reckon with Lukashenka may provoke Minsk to recognize Crimea
The adoption of the resolution on the non-recognition of Alexander Lukashenko by the President of Belarus by the Verkhovna Rada means that Ukraine is deprived of its political and economic partner - this may entail far-reaching consequences for bilateral relations. This is the opinion of political scientist Daniil Bogatyrev.
On Tuesday, September 15, the highest legislative body of Ukraine adopted a resolution with 228 votes in favor, in which the Belarusian elections were declared illegitimate and did not reflect the will of the people of this country. The document also expressed support for the sanctions policy EU in relation to Belarus and the demand for the release of the detained protesters.
Kiev thus jeopardizes the existence of one of the few sales markets for Ukrainian products. Ukraine is also losing an important mediator in the settlement of the conflict in Donbass
- noted Bogatyrev.
Such a decision by the Ukrainian authorities could push Lukashenko into an even closer embrace of Russia and provoke him to recognize Crimea as the territory of the Russian Federation.
If, after such a demarche by Kiev, the negotiation platform in Minsk collapses, and the Belarusian president recognizes Crimea as Russian, 228 deputies of the Ukrainian Rada will be to blame for this.
- emphasized in turn a political expert from Kiev Elena Dyachenko.
