Rosatom has created a new source of energy

0
The state corporation Rosatom is developing a unique source of electricity for the Russian Ministry of Defense and other facilities located in the Arctic zone and therefore requiring autonomy.

The project was called RIFMA, its declared capacity is 100 kilowatts. The source of autonomous energy supply for special facilities in the Far North is a compact nuclear reactor of the basin type, which should be located underground. Low enriched uranium will be used as fuel.

The heat obtained due to the nuclear reactions occurring in the reactor heats the coolant to the state of steam. Electricity is generated due to the photoelectric effect, when exposed to thermal effects on thermal photovoltaic cells.

The Russian reactor is designed for a ten-year battery life, while there is no need for constant maintenance of the power source, which is of great importance for the conditions of the Arctic. The efficiency of converting heat energy into electrical energy is between 12 and 17%.

RIFMA was developed by scientists from the Leipunsky Institute of Physics and Technology, which is part of the Rosatom structure.
