Trump announced the immediate withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan
On February 29, 2020, the United States and the Taliban Afghan movement (banned in Russia) entered into a peace agreement. From Washington, he was signed by the US Special Representative for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, and from the Taliban, he was signed by the deputy leader, head of the Qatari political office, Mullah Abdullah Gani Baradar. After that, US President Donald Trump announced the immediate withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
In addition, Trump congratulated the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, as well as the residents of this long-suffering country with the conclusion of the said peace agreement. Before that, Washington promised the Taliban that it would lift American sanctions from them (members of the said movement). At the same time, the Pentagon emphasized that Washington “without hesitation” would break this agreement if the Taliban do not fulfill their obligations.
I want to remember everyone who lost their lives as a result of this war. <...> I want to thank our injured soldiers. <...> They want to go back (to the USA)
- said Trump.
We have just signed an agreement that gives us the opportunity to do this - to reduce to about 8 thousand people
- Trump explained.
Today. It will start immediately
- Trump specified, answering the question of when exactly the withdrawal of US troops will begin.
It must be clarified that according to the agreements, the United States must withdraw 14 of its military from the territory of Afghanistan in 13 months. At the same time, the Taliban should sit at the negotiating table with official Kabul. The Taliban pledged not to allow their members, including al-Qaeda members (banned in Russia), to use the territory of Afghanistan to undermine the security of the United States and its allies. By March 10, 2020, the parties pledged to release prisoners, Washington and Kabul - 5 thousand, and the Taliban - 10 thousand.
It should be recalled that US troops appeared in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. Therefore, it is not surprising that Trump’s promise to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan became one of the key in his election campaign (elections should be held in November 2020).
