Why is the new Tu-160M already nicknamed the "Black Swan"
On February 2, the first Tu-160M bomber-carrier bomber took off for the first time. It is worth clarifying that this is not about a new aircraft, but the deeply modernized Soviet Tu-160 White Swan.
Today, building such a machine from scratch is a very difficult task. The aircraft consists of 30% of titanium alloys, which are welded only in a neutral environment or in vacuum. But where to get the appropriate camera for the manufacture of a 12-meter center beam?
The Soviet Union had a similar installation, which has no analogues in the world, located at the Kazan plant. However, during the years of “devastation” the workshop was abandoned.
Despite the fact that few believed in the restoration of a unique enterprise, in 2017, work began on welding the first large elements from titanium. Soon, the production of the latest Tu-160M2 will begin here, and the flight of the modernized Tu-160M was just necessary for testing the latest equipment and systems.
It is expected that the modern version of the bomber will fly into the air next year, and by 2027 our VKS will receive 10 of these machines.
The Tu-160 "White Swan" to this day remains the largest military supersonic aircraft with a variable geometry wing, which has over 40 world records. And it is no accident that the new version of the missile carrier has already been nicknamed the “Black Swan”. After all, this particular aircraft can quickly and unexpectedly change the course of world history.
