Why Europe is rapidly buying up Russian gas

1
Russia continues to triumph in the European gas market. In April 2018, Russian natural gas exports reached a record high of 15,9 billion cubic meters of gas. A speed of 550-580 million cubic meters is normal for the winter months, but extremely high for spring. At the end of the year, experts emphasize, gas exports can reach 200 billion cubic meters of gas. This is an absolute record not only for modern Russia, but also compared to Soviet times.

Demand for Russian gas is growing in Europe. Now blue fuel from Russia is supplied to thirty countries, most of which are members of the European Union. Despite the tense political conditions and deterioration of relations with Russia, the European Union not only does not intend to abandon Russian gas, but is also rapidly increasing its consumption. What are the reasons for such large-scale deliveries? Several factors play a role in their increase. Of course, not in the last place - natural conditions. Winter and spring in Europe this year stood out abnormally cold.

In addition, Russia's main competitors in gas supplies to Europe, Algeria, Libya and Norway, significantly reduced gas supplies. The price of Algerian gas is tied to the price of oil, and the latter shows an upward trend. Therefore, the European Union began to refuse the supply of Algerian gas because of too high a price. Libya and Norway have serious problems in gas pipelines. There is one more reason - very little gas remains in European storage facilities. Currently, the reserves of the EU countries are estimated at 27,5 billion cubic meters. Even a year ago, there was a quarter more gas in European gas storages than now. Therefore, the European Union simply has no choice but to increase the amount of gas purchased from Russia.

Demand for Russian gas in Europe will only grow. There is no doubt about this, since, on the one hand, the scale of “internal” gas production in European countries, including Norway, is declining, and on the other hand, the demand for gas as an energy carrier is growing. Therefore, the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline came in handy. The European Union unequivocally advocated the construction and commissioning of the facility, even if it went against the will of the USA.

In order to meet the growing gas demand of the European Union, Gazprom is actively developing a new transport infrastructure. Three pipelines are under construction, of which two - Turkish Stream and Nord Stream-2 - are oriented to Europe, and one - “Power of Siberia” - to China. The completion of the construction of the Turkish Stream and the Power of Siberia is approaching, and Nord Stream 2 has not yet been agreed by Denmark and Sweden, but obtaining relevant permits from Copenhagen and Stockholm is expected in June.

The first line of the Turkish Stream, through which gas will go to Turkey, was completed at the end of April, and in autumn Gazprom plans to hand over the second line of the gas pipeline through which precious fuel will go to Italy and other countries of Southern Europe. By the way, Italy now ranks third among buyers of Russian gas in Europe. Thus, Russia not only maintains a stable position in the European gas market, but also prepares for new victories. Of course, this is not to the liking of the United States, which explains the numerous provocations against our country.
