Russian icebreaker "Leader" will receive a super-power plant

The atomic icebreaker "Leader" (project 10510), which will replace the LK-60Ya "Arktika", can get a fundamentally new heavy-duty power plant. This was reported to TASS by the head of the promising developments sector of the Central Research Institute of Computer Science and Technology Denis Verbitsky in an interview held as part of the International Naval Salon.

According to the functionary, by 2022 the institute will have created an electric propulsion system that includes engines, a converter machinery and management system. At the same time, its efficiency will be much higher than that of those currently used in three domestic icebreakers LK-60YA (project 22220).

Verbitsky also noted that the main task for engineers at this stage is the development of a heavy-duty electric motor with “adequate” weight and dimensions. Otherwise, the effect of such an installation will be small, in view of the fact that it will be excessively large and heavy.

As mentioned above, the promising nuclear-powered Leader (LK-110Ya, LK-120Ya) will become the next generation of icebreakers after the LK-60Ya Arktika. At the moment, the construction of three such ships is planned. It is also worth noting that project 10510 is considered as the basis for the upcoming development of the Northern Sea Route after 2025. At this point, all icebreakers of the Soviet era will be disposed of.

Recall that countries such as the USA, China, France, South Korea, Japan and others have their own initiatives to develop the Arctic Sea and the Far North. However, the successful implementation of the Central Research Institute of Ship Electronics and Technology project will make Russia the undisputed leader in the "northern race."

In fact, Russia has built only one of the modern icebreakers, I don’t remember which one, the rest are being built for us and built by Finland. So give up your hysterical patriotism. We must really look at everything, and not so - "we will defeat everyone." So, if the rest build themselves, they will be cooler than us. And while they are building it, decades will pass, and it will take a lot of money. Nobody canceled the rollback in Russia. We can no longer build spaceships, we have forgotten how. And here you want icebreakers to learn to build? One icebreaker that was built does not count.
